About Cairo
Egypt's capital, Cairo sits on the Nile River. Known as the city of a thousand minarets, Cairo was founded in the 10th Century AD. The land where the ghosts of Pharaohs, Romans, Caliphs, Turkish Khedives, British and French colonizers roam, the city is straight out of school history books. Close to Giza and the iconic Great Sphinx and pyramids, this ancient land is stained with its antiquity.
This is where you can indulge in puffing on a shisha, mezza of hummus, falafel or some stuffed grape leaves, drinking alcohol only if you are over 21 and where dating is frowned upon, so be careful of those smoldering Egyptian eyes. Sunday is a traditional day off for everyone, not just a weekend day; so don't attempt to go shopping.
Swarming with people, it has a population of around 8 million and is one of the largest cities in the Middle East, actually the world. It has been hit by plague of some sort or another over 50 times, which dented the population for a while and created the need for a 6 km pile of tombs. Hence it has been referred to as the "City of the Dead". You should visit "Old Cairo" for a true taste of ancient history or the El Mokattam Mountain Cave Church (aka Monastery of St Simon). A monastery in the Mokattam Mountains known as "garbage city", this is where the garbage collectors live, sorting through and recycling the city's waste. The actual cave church has been carved out of the mountainside and is the largest one in the world of its type being able to seat up to 20,000 people.
